What is Ginkgo biloba?

The extract of ginkgo biloba is taken from ginkgoes.  Ginkgoes are one of the oldest living trees; the fossil record dates its existence as far back as the Mesozoic period (63 million to 230 million years ago).  Considered a sacred tree throughout China, it has been used as medicine for thousands of years.

Why is Ginkgo biloba so Important?

Clinical Trials have shown Ginkgo biloba to be effective in treating the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia.

In the Zhang study: Doctors Zhang et al. conducted a clinical trial involving 109 patients with chronic schizophrenia in China in 2001.  Patients were treated with either a) an antipsychotic and up to 360mg of ginkgo or b) an antipsychotic and placebo, per day.  Zhang and his colleagues indicated that in patients with chronic, refractory schizophrenia, extract of ginkgo biloba added to an antipsychotic was more effective than placebo added to antipsychotic in treating positive symptoms of schizophrenia.

In the Luo study: A clinical trial using 545 patients with schizophrenia in China was conducted in 1997.  Patients were divided randomly into 2 groups.  One received 120mg of extract of ginkgo biloba three times daily and the other didn’t (control group).  Patients in both groups received their maintenance neuroleptics throughout the 16-week research treatment.  The patients’ rating scores of Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms showed a much greater reduction in the ginkgo biloba group than those in the control group, from the sixth week of treatment.   Ginkgo biloba presented a better therapeutic effect for chronic patients with schizophrenia than the control when rated with traditional global rating method as well.  On this ratio, 44.98% showed a marked improvement in the ginkgo biloba group compared to 20.98% in the control group.  In conclusion, Dr Luo and other doctors found that combining ginkgo biloba and neuroleptics was an effective medicine for chronic patients with schizophrenia.  Moreover, it appeared to have few side effects within the recommended dose range.

The use of ginkgo biloba as an adjunct to an antipsychotic is effective in decreasing negative symptoms in patients with resistant-resistant schizophrenia.

In the Doruk study: In 2008, a group of doctors conducted a placebo-controlled study in Turkey.  They used 42 chronic, treatment-resistant patients with schizophrenia.  The focus of this study was the systematic evaluation of the clinical effects of the extract of ginkgo biloba as an adjunct to the typical antipsychotic (clozapine) in the treatment of refractory schizophrenia.  The patients who were maintained on optimal doses of an antipsychotic, were administered either 120mg/day of ginkgo biloba or placebo for 12 weeks.  Clinical evaluations with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms and the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms were completed bi-weekly.  The use of ginkgo biloba as an adjunct to clozapine was effective in decreasing negative symptoms in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia.
